Straw marquetry

Straw marquetry is an art very similar to that of wood marquetry, in which straw replaces the wood veneer. It is a technique from the Far East which was imported to Europe in England and France in the 17th century. To obtain a pallet similar to that of wood veneer, wheat or oat straw is split and then soaked in cold, hot or lukewarm water. The strips, once more or less intensively ironed, present a variety of tones ranging from light gold to the darkest dark brown, the straw can also be tinted.

The Workshop

At the gates of Paris, the factory brings together the best craftsmen, often from the “Boule” school, and uses the finest materials for the manufacture of excellent products. Marquetry work requires the use of different species of precious wood. cut into delicate shapes, assembled and glued to create a multitude of patterns. Mother-of-pearl, straw and gold inlays are also used as real pieces of goldsmithery.

These processes require a lot of know-how and precision. These secrets have always been well protected by very specialized but above all passionate workers.
