I Am You – The reflection of self in others
With “I Am You”, Kota explores the idea that others are often a reflection of ourselves. The people we admire can reveal qualities we recognize in ourselves, while those we judge sometimes reflect aspects of our own personality that are harder to accept.
This reflection takes shape in a raw composition, built up in successive layers. Black meets scratched white paint, revealing fragments of gold leaf. Handwritten words, symbols, and drawings intersect across the different surfaces of the box, like thoughts and experiences accumulated over time.
The contrast between the darkness of the background and the golden highlights plays a central role in the work. For Kota, these two dimensions are inseparable: they represent the different facets that make up each of us. “I Am You” thus invites us to look at the people around us in a different light, by questioning what we can recognize of ourselves through them.
