Straw marquetry

Straw marquetry is an art very similar to wood marquetry, in which straw replaces wood veneer. It is a Far Eastern technique that was imported to Europe, specifically England and France, in the 17th century. To obtain a palette similar to that of wood veneer, wheat or oat straw is split and then soaked in cold, hot, or warm water. Once ironed to varying degrees of intensity, the strips present a variety of tones ranging from light golden to the darkest brown; the straw can also be dyed.

The Workshop

At the gates of Paris, the manufacture brings together the best craftsmen, often graduates of the "Boulle" school, and uses the noblest materials to create products of excellence. Marquetry work requires the use of different precious wood species cut into delicate shapes, assembled and glued to create a multitude of patterns. Inlays of mother-of-pearl, straw, and gold are also used like true pieces of goldsmithery.

These processes require a great deal of skill and precision. These secrets have always been well protected by highly specialized and, above all, passionate workers.
